Loren Eugene Merkel

February 22, 1941 — June 16, 2025

Loren Eugene Merkel, a dedicated and loving soul, passed away on June 16, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on February 22, 1941, in Hillsboro, Illinois, Loren lived a life marked by hard work, commitment to family, and a deep connection to his passions.

Loren was well-known for his love of the outdoors; he found immense joy in hunting and fishing, pursuits that brought him closer to nature and afforded him many cherished moments. He also had a keen interest in collecting firearms. As a farmer, Loren dedicated much of his life to nurturing the land and contributing to the agricultural community, embodying the very spirit of hard work that defined his character.

His commitment extended beyond his personal passions. Loren was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus PANA Council, where he fostered friendships and contributed to the community that he held dear.

He is survived by his son, Brian Merkel; his sister, Barbara Kook, and her husband, Bill; and one grandson, Gunnar Merkel. Loren’s passing leaves a significant void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. Loren was united in marriage to Phyllis Merkel and they lovingly shared 55 years together.

Loren was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis (Ullrick) Merkel, along with his mother and father, Gladys (Cole) Merkel and Chester Merkel.

As we reflect on Loren’s life, they remember a man whose dedication to his family and passions made a considerable impact on those around him. His hardworking spirit and loving nature will forever be cherished in the hearts of all who were touched by his presence.

Services will be held at a later date.
