John Dennis Held, born July 23rd, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri, departed this life on July 20th, 2026, just shy of his 87th birthday. Throughout his long and meaningful life, John faithfully embraced his roles as a devoted family man, an engaged civic leader, and a steadfast friend to many.

John was the husband of the late Barbara "Jerry" (Brown) Held, with whom he was united in marriage on August 6, 1966. Together, they built a family rooted in love and shared values.

John’s legacy lives on in his children: Dawn Held and her partner Pam Mayrose, and John Held and his wife Alice. He was a cherished grandfather to Devin (Sonya), Alexandria "Ale" (Jordan), Daniel, Elaina, Victoria "Tori," Thomas, and Sofia. His presence will also be missed by his great-grandchildren Paytinn, Sawyer, Declan, Parker, Lennon, Grant, and Ronnie and another great grandbaby on the way. Also surviving is his brother, Gary Held; loving, caring and devoted nephew, Sam Brown; cousin, Eugene “Gene” Held, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and his very special dog, Spot.

He is reunited with his wife Barbara "Jerry" Held, and his parents Herman Held and Johanna (Jaworek) Held.

A proud veteran, John served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964. This period in his life instilled in him a deep sense of responsibility, patriotism, and camaraderie that he carried forward into his civilian life.

John’s roots ran deep in South St. Louis City, where he blossomed as a third-generation master floral designer. His love of working with his hands and nurturing life from the soil were evident in the hours he spent in his greenhouse, delighting in the fruit of his labor. With dirt on his hands and the heat of the greenhouse surrounding him, John found happiness and purpose. His dedication to his craft and to the natural world was matched only by his generous spirit and readiness to lend a hand to those in need.

Community was the heartbeat of John’s life. He was actively involved with the American Legion, a committed supporter of Scouting, and contributed tirelessly to the Washington County Farmers Market. John extended his care and vision by serving on the Board for the Washington County Health Department, continually striving to make his community a stronger, healthier place for all.

Above all else, John was a family man—deeply dedicated to both his projects and those he loved. His trustworthiness, generosity, and personal faith grounded him; strong Christian values and a lasting attachment to the Holy Cross Church shaped his life and work. Animals held a special place in his heart as well, enjoying their companionship and the simple joy they brought every day.

John’s steadfast work ethic, humble service, and pure-hearted devotion leave an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered fondly and missed dearly, yet his influence and the love he shared will live on in all those whose lives he so generously touched.

Arrangements are being handled by Moore Funeral Homes, Potosi, MO where the family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Friday, July 24th, 2026. Funeral services will be at Moore Funeral Home at 1:00 PM, Friday, July 24th, 2026. Interment will be private.
