Janet Canter

Janet Aline Canter, formerly of Bismarck, passed away January 26, 2024 at Southbrook Nursing Center in Farmington at the age of 85 years and 1 day. She was born on January 25, 1939 at Redford, MO to the late Oliver “Ollie” Raymond Pannebecker and Sarah Elzona (Dodson) Pannebecker.

Janet was united in marriage to Gene Edward Canter in Bismarck, MO on October 12, 1956 and they shared over 54 years of married life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gene; four sisters: Edna Reagan,  Dora “Dode” Helms, Geraldine “Gerry” Grider and Pauline Helms; three brothers: Harvey Pannebecker, Paul Pannebecker and George Pannebecker.

Janet is survived by her daughter Glenda Sadler and husband Jack of Desloge. Three grandsons also survive: Andrew “AJ” Sadler and wife Aaron of Fort Knox, KY, Cory Sadler and wife Kayla of Farmington, MO and Brent Sadler and wife Alyssa of Union, MO. Nine great-grandchildren: Robyn Gormley (Jeremy), Cameron Obando (Nate), Taylor Sadler, Drew, Gabe, Sam, Django and Maven. One great-great grandchild, Eva Gormley also survives as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Janet was also caregiver to two of her nephews, Harvey Ed and Donnie Pannebecker. Janet was a homemaker her entire life. She also worked for a short time in a small grocery store that she and Gene had at their home in Belgrade called Gene & Jan’s Store.

Among her accomplishments in life was getting the visiting hours at Farmington Community Hospital (now Parkland) changed. It was Christmastime and her mother was hospitalized there. With eight children, there wasn’t a lot of time for everyone to visit, so Janet organized a successful petition drive to get the hours extended.

Janet had many pets over the years. She had two cats that she was extremely fond of, Bright Eyes and Bandit. They both had to be put down due to their ill health. She had both cats cremated and requested that their ashes be buried with her.

Janet was especially fond of her little dog “Peanut” and even referred to herself as “Peanut’s Grandma. Peanut would visit her in the nursing home almost every day where he became a favorite of both the residents and the staff. He is now 14 years old and still going strong.
