Edith Mae
Portell
Sep 25, 1943 — Jul 30, 2026
Edith Mae Portell, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026. Edith was born on September 25, 1943, in Cadet, Missouri, a daughter to the late Annie Marie (Sanders) Hammond and Edgar Lee Hammond.
Edith is survived by her children, Jesse “Porkey” Portell and Doris Henry, Lisa Kent, and Peggy Wiggins, her sister, Linda Politte, grandchildren, Heather, Sierra, Eliza (Blakly), Heather (Brandi), Danielle (Matt), April (Brian), Michelle, Cassandra, Clark, Kevin Jr., Kelly, Katie, Casey, and Katrina in addition to many great grandchildren, other relatives and special friends who will always cherish the memories they made together. Edith was preceded in death by her loving husband Jesse "Bucky" Portell, dear sister Hattie Richards, her brothers Roger and Jimmy Hammond, son-in-law Kenny Wiggins, and daughter-in-law Christina Smalley.
Edith was a woman who found deep joy in simple pleasures. She adored her flowers and gardens, finding solace and happiness among the blooms she so carefully nurtured. Excitement filled her heart during Thanksgiving and Christmas, her two favorite times of year, when her home would overflow with the warmth and laughter of family and friends. Whether it was through sharing a meal, dancing, or celebrating life’s special moments, Edith embodied the spirit of joy and togetherness. A natural storyteller, Edith often regaled those around her with tales from her childhood and what she fondly referred to as the "olden" days. She relished every opportunity to gather her loved ones, fostering cherished traditions and memories that will endure for years to come.
Edith’s memory will live on in her family, the stories she told, the gardens she loved, and the joy she brought into every gathering. She will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know her.
